Principal Signalling Design Engineer
Main duties and responsibilities:
• Carry out design, design production checking, and independent checking of signalling systems as required
• On allocated projects undertake the role of CRE(Design) / RDE
• Provide functional support and guidance to the Design Engineer(s) within the team on all aspects of signal design within allocated projects
• Participate in the preparation of technical details, specifications and tenders for signalling projects
• Monitor the progress of works and ensure that the development, design, construction and testing requirements are met and effect remedial action when required
• Ensure that the technical and safety standards are maintained in all aspects of design work in order that successful project implementation and future reliability is achieved
• Evaluate the quality and technical accuracy of tenders and make recommendations to obtain the best available commercial award for the Company
• Commensurate with the project role, maintain a continuous communication with contractors and customers in the development and implementation of projects to ensure a uniformity of purpose and common targets
• On allocated projects participate in the planning, programming and monitoring of resources to meet programme and budget requirements and targets
• Assist in the forecast of resource requirements necessary for allocated projects in sufficient time to ensure that they can be provided
• Perform duties as directed by Management from time to time in connection with Signalling design activities Discharge safety responsibilities in relation to CDM Regulations, Health and Safety legislation, Company procedures including development of the project Safety Plan
• Provide training to others
Essential criteria:
• Competent in design production techniques.
• Broad experience of interlocking design and /or signalling scheme development
• Signalling overrun risk assessments
• CRE / RDE duties
• Strong team leadership and motivational ability
• Excellent communication and presentation
• Excellent understanding of task, time and people management
• Good interpersonal skills
• Good commercial awareness
• Extensive knowledge of signalling design principles
Desirable criteria:
• IRSE Licence holder for the Categories of:
Signalling Principles - 1.1.550 (was 1.1.150D)
and / or Schemes Designer – 1.1.150A.
and Design Verifier – 1.1.160.
• Degree / HNC or equivalent in engineering or similar
• Chartered Engineer Status (or close to)
• A1 Assessor qualification
• Member of the IRSE, IET or other recognised professional body
